Time to Say Goodbye to Florence

So it’s time to say goodbye to Florence, Oregon. Living in a small rural community has its advantages. However, the hospital here is a small rural hospital, and as a result of the government upheaval, they had layoffs. Unfortunately, Mark was among those laid off. So we have decided to pack our RV and hit the road again. However, before we did, we participated in many exciting activities in Florence in October. I did a lot of hiking. We spent a lot of time at the ocean, and here are the photos from our experiences in our last month in Florence. If we have the chance to come back, we will. It has been lovely here. The people are great, and the outdoor activities never end.

I have continued to hike on the coast and in Cape Perpetua with my new friends from Florence. I met Melannie through the hiking group. She was able to do longer, more strenuous hikes with me, and for that I am grateful. We saw incredible views, majestic trees, and lots of mushrooms. Some of the women in the group foraged for mushrooms and graciously taught us how to identify them. I hope to hike with her again in Las Vegas, where she lives for part of the year.

Mark and I also went to see Circles in the Sand at Heceta Beach. It is incredible to me that they could set the whole thing up in between tides and make it so artistic.

One of the most unique sights were the King Tides. They just started on Monday of this week, so we were able to see them. It is hard to put into words how impressive these tides are. There was one on Monday and I went to the North Jetty with one of my hiking groups. The Just Around the Corner: Women’s Hiking Group was the first group I joined when we arrived in Florence. This group of ladies have made me feel very welcome and I am grateful to them for taking me in. On Monday the local Coastguard station was using the King tide to train and it was very impressive.

On Thursday, Mark and I visited Cape Perpetua to see another King Tide at Thor’s Well and the Devil’s Churn. The water in the Devil’s Churn looked like cream from being churned up by the tides. The foam was so thick that it was floating in the air like snow.

Sometimes the universe sends you a message, and the message Mark and I received was to hit the road and go full Bohemian. We plan to travel from Florence, Oregon, down to Texas to establish our residency. We had initially considered this before we left Tennessee, but opportunities arose, and we have thoroughly enjoyed our time in Oregon.

We’ve decided to take our time, and as we travel from the Pacific Northwest to the southwest, we’ll be stopping off in Death Valley, Las Vegas, the Painted Desert, and the Petrified Forest. We will also be visiting Mark’s family in Lawton, Oklahoma, for Thanksgiving. Overall, we are fortunate people. We have resources and our health, and we plan to use those to our advantage.

Once we get to Texas, we have decided to try our hand at work camping. It’s something we’ve been investigating for the past couple of years. It will allow us to move every couple of months, meet lots of new people, and hopefully go to many cool places.
